Game developers: Nintendo is not doing enough to promote WiiWare and DSiWare

It's no secret that Nintendo hasn't been proliferating the online sales front, and for some of the developers on WiiWare and DSiWare, the company just isn't making enough effort to promote the service. As a result, many games on the online store have gone unnoticed, much to the dismay of their developers.

"Nintendo, in my opinion, could do more to keep the WiiWare and DSiWare stores in customer's minds" said Nick Watt of Australian developer, Nnooo! Games. "It is great that every new customer knows about and uses these services when they first connect their Wiis or DS. However, how many continue to frequent those stores? I think it is and should be Nintendo's responsibility to have a continued marketing presence to maintain people's awareness about the service."

"We feel that Nintendo is not doing enough to promote the service at all," said Jag Jaege of JV Games. "We feel that the vast majority of Wii owners have absolutely no idea that they can even connect to the internet."

Nintendo already launched a sizable ad campaign for their digital distribution avenues, but the push goes only as far as the United Kingdom.

Super Mario War Wii 1.0

This is a port of Super Mario War to the Wii, using SDL Wii. It should be fully functional (with the exception of netplay - which requires someone (hint) to port SDL_Net). To make this port possible, I've had to rewrite significant portions of SDL Wii, particularly a complete re-write of the file, video, and sound systems. However, I'm hoping this work will encourage other developers to port more SDL-based games and applications to the Wii.

Smile! Fatal Frame 4 fan translation available

A dedicated team of homebrewers has done what Nintendo and Tecmo never did: translate Fatal Frame IV. A team at Fatal Frame fansite Beyond the Camera's Lens has released a patch that swaps out the Japanese text in the Tecmo/Nintendo/Grasshopper Manufacture-developed Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse with its own translated English text and allows the Japanese disc to be loaded in other regions' Wiis. The best part? It runs from an SD card on any Wii -- no matter which region, and without the need for modding.

We suspect sites like Play-Asia and YesAsia are about to experience a significant increase in the number of orders for this 2008 survival horror game.

Ybase Sega Saturn emulator for wii

Yabause Wii is the Wii version of Yabause, a Sega Saturn emulator, and is the first for Wii to emulate the complex processes of the Sega Saturn. The Wii port is not released officially. New Super Mario Bros. *did* outsell Modern Warfare 2

A lot of eyebrows raised when Reggie Fils-Aime confidently claimed that New Super Mario Bros. Wiiwill outsell Modern Warfare 2. What do you know, he was right after all.

The surprising data reveals that the Wii exclusive did surpass Modern Warfare 2, at least on the PS3. For the month of December, Mario and friends sold some 2.82 million copies, which now brings its sales to 4.21 million. The PS3 version of the world war title currently stands at 2.95 million, while the xbox version is at 5.83 million.

Nintendo's big man is keeping the challenge till the end of this January, so let's see if Mario can surge ahead and catch up with the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2. Nonetheless, as it stands, that's still mighty impressive.

The plumber in red over-alls has obviously not lost its touch.

Iwata: 100 million Miis created since 2006

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that 100 million Miis have been created by Wii users since the system's launch in November 2006.

Speaking at a game seminar , Iwata broke the milestone number down a bit more, saying Japanese Wii owners created 20 million Miis, while American Wii owners created 80 million.

With worldwide sales of Wii over 65 million according to VGChartz, some claim the 100 million Mii number seems low. However, it is important to note that these numbers were as of December 4, before the 2009 holiday season in which Nintendo sold nearly one-fifth of all US Wii's since the system's launch. The figure also doesn't include any Mii's created outside Japan and North America, including Europe, Australia, and mainland Asian.

Assuming roughly 35 million Wii consoles between Japan and America, that means each Wii owner has created about three Miis.

Be it an upgrade to the existing hardware or a brand new console, there have been many rumours and forum chit-chat over the last year concerning Nintendo’s plan to release a successor to the Wii.

However, Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed the continued support to current hardware in an interview with Bloomberg Business Week.

Reggie has gone on record to say that no announcement will be made regarding any new hardware at the upcoming Games Developers Conference and that the Wii has a very long life in front of it.

Many analysts believe that rival companies plans to step into the motion control market with higher specification consoles and a slowdown in sales of the Wii will drive Nintendo to release a new console.

But with new games based on fan-favourite characters due out this year in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metriode The other M, Nintendo is confident that any downturn in hardware sales will be reversed and the Wii will continue to be console that dominates the living room and sales.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Shooters

Upcoming brawler to feature 2D scrolling shoot-'em-up minigame

You heard right - Capcom are including an old-school shoot-'em-up in their anticipated fighter . The minigame, set in the landscapes o fLost Planet, will let up to four players loose in what promises to be some crazy blasting action.

Playable characters include Ryu and PTX-40A from the Capcom side of the game, and Ken the Eagle and Tekkaman from Tatsunoko, the popular anime studio who will be providing half the game's fighters.

Capcom have a rich gaming heritage and it's nice to see them drawing on past influences to create something like this. It's sure to please those amongst us who mourn the death of the arcade-era anyway. It's a nice inclusion, but it might risk drawing our attention more than the actual, you know, fighting.

Movie-streaming service becomes available this spring

Thank goodness for that! An end to the incessant rumours — Netflix will be making it to the Wii in the next few months, according to The New York Times.

You'll be able to subscribe to the service for the humble sum of $9 per month. Once you're a member it's a simple matter of whacking the Netflix disc into your console and streaming some movies. As the Wii doesn't support HD, you'll be limited to their standard definition range, but if you watch a lot of movies and suspect you could be saving money with a subscription, it might be worth checking out.

Sadly UK users will have to go without, as Netflix is still a US-only service. But seeing as it'll now be available on all three major consoles, and Netflix seems to have made itself something of an industry-standard, world domination may well be the next step.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew Apps and DVD Playback and more

The bannerbomb exploit is the newest way to install the Homebrew Channel and works on the newest systems, unlike Twilight Princess—which has been a defunct hack since menu 4.0 was introduced.

How does it work? The hack exploits the Wii menu itself, loading a fake banner which causes a system crash and allows the exploit to load unsigned code. During our field testing it took—not counting time to carefully read the instructions and take photographs—less than ten minutes to complete the process.

For this hack you'll need a Wii, an SD card formatted to FAT, a copy of the bannerbomb file(I've linked to the banner bomb exploit file that works for the most number of Wii units right out of the gate; if it doesn't work for you, visit the main page and try some of the other versions), and the HackMii installer. The following instructions are an expanded photo-pictorial version of the instructions found on the bannerbomb exploit author's site.

You'll need to copy the files from your computer to the SD card. If you're using an SD card you already use for the Wii, you'll need to rename the "private" directory to "privateold" for the duration of the hack.

First, unzip the contents of the banner bomb exploit onto the card. This should create a "private" directory with the contents of the zip file.

Next, copy the installer.elf file from the HackMii installer onto the root of the SD card and rename it to boot.elf—as seen above.

Once you have the files on the SD card, it's time to toss it in the Wii and boot up.

Here we are at the initial main menu of the Wii. Nothing special to see here except for the fact that it's been over a week since we've hopped on the Wii Fit.

Click on the circular Wii icon in the lower left corner. DO NOT click on the SD card icon if you've got a newer or updated Wii with the 4.0 menu. You won't hurt your Wii, but the exploit won't work.

Once you've clicked on the Wii icon, you'll be in the sub-menu seen above. Click on Data Management to access the next menu.

Click on Channels to get to the SD card. You won't be able to access it via the Save Data tab.

Click on the SD card tab to load the exploit.

The Wii will ask you "Load boot.dol/elf?", click Yes.

Not turning your Wii-hacking skills into a profit engine for global domination is a very altruistic thing to do. Take a moment to be thankful for all the awesome people in the world that create and distribute the free and open-source software that makes our lives better. Press 1 to continue loading the exploit.

At this point the exploit has been executed and the HackMii installer is the temporary operating system—think LiveCD—of the Wii. From this menu you can select whether or not you want to install The Homebrew Channel, DVDx, and/or BootMii—BootMii is a more advanced tool which you may or may not care to load, it's essentially a boot loader for the Wii that provides a more extensive "takeover" of the Wii than The Homebrew Channel. You can read more about it here and here, if you're curious.

On this menu you install or uninstall the respective tools. If this is your first time running the HackMii Installer you won't see the Uninstall option under any of the entries. During testing we forgot to photograph this screen and hopped back into the installer to snap it.

Install The Homebrew Channel? Yes, Ma'am.

After you agree to install the The Homebrew Channel it usually installs in a matter of seconds. Far faster than we were able to raise the camera to snap a picture. You'll see the SUCCESS in cash-money-green when it is done installing. You can repeat the installation process for DVDx and BootMii if you desire.

After The Homebrew Channel finishes installing you'll be taken to the channel itself. The Homebrew Channel runs applications out of the /YourSDCard/Apps/ folder. During this screenshot our SD card was empty, thus the expansive bubbly-goodness of the default Homebrew screen. As you add applications they will appear here.

Now we're back to the main menu. 12:46pm to 1:15pm and we're done! Under 30 minutes, including stopping to take pictures.

Wondering what you can do with it once you have the Homebrew Channel installed? Well, for example, you can backup your Wii games to a hard drive for safe keeping and faster load times, play old-school games in emulation, and play DVD-backups without a modchip.
